So you have a physical or mental problem. They are real. They are hard. They can wreak havoc on your life and change the dynamics of your family. Sometimes when we get a diagnosis, it can be either a relief or depressing…or a little of both. But when you get your diagnosis, how does it effect you? Is your diagnosis a sentence, crutch, or an explanation? Your diagnosis is a tool, but it must be used adequately.
When Your Diagnosis is a Sentence
Oftentimes when a diagnosis comes through it can feel like a sentence that must last forever. And some can last forever, so I get that can be very depressing. But most times, things can change and conditions can improve. But mindset matters. If you receive a diagnosis and decide that it can never be changed, that may be worse than the actual condition itself. If your diagnosis is a sentence, then you are not using your diagnosis as a tool.
When Your Diagnosis is a Crutch
If you receive a diagnosis and you sit back and use it as a crutch, this also becomes a problem. This is when you expect everyone to do everything for you, and you never take a stand against a diagnosis to try and fix it. You may take the medications or do some of the routines, but mostly you just want people to take pity on you and take care of you without any personal responsibility. Please don’t get me wrong. People should offer sympathy and empathy, and if you have any diagnosis you will need a team of support to help you. But this does not mean that people are there to do things which you can still do yourself, and it is vital that you continue to fight against the diagnosis. If your diagnosis is a crutch, then your diagnosis is not a tool.
When Your Diagnosis Is an Explanation
If, however, you view the diagnosis as a way to know what is wrong so you can actively fight against it, then you will be in a much better situation. When you view the diagnosis as a means to an end, you now know what you need to change. You know how to devote your efforts to change things and make things better. You’ve been given tools to try to combat the physical or mental symptoms and you can put energy into making a change for the better. If you use your diagnosis as an explanation, then your diagnosis is a tool.
It Takes Time
I’m not saying that the moment you get a diagnosis you will immediately get better. I’m not saying that the road to recovery is easy. And yes, there are some diagnoses that are far more severe and hard to combat. Some diagnoses require much more help and assistance. But for some diagnoses, viewing the verdict as a tool to reach the end is helpful.
Your Diagnosis is a Tool
Fighting a ghost is nearly impossible. If you don’t know what you are up against, how can you fight against it. But if you have a diagnosis and an end goal to resolve, then you have a fighting chance. By devoting yourself to the activities to make a condition better, you will be in a much better place. Believing in yourself and devoting your energies in the proper places – to get better – versus feeling sorry for yourself and wallowing in misery is a much better place to be. Your thoughts have an effect on your body. If you believe you can overcome, you are more likely to be able to do so.
